The origin of Archival Property Solutions can be traced back to the night of Thursday, September 13, 2001. That’s when my house and virtually everything in it burned to ashes. The next morning, while poking through a heap of charred, soaking wet fire debris in the middle of what hours before had been my living room, an insurance claims adjuster handed me a stack of loss claim forms and asked me to list the details of every item lost. Given that the fire came on the heels of the World Trade Center tragedy in New York City just two days earlier, I was too agitated, anxious and overwhelmed to realize the enormity of the tasks that awaited me. Had I known, I don’t think I could have put one foot in front of the other.

For the next nine months, my life was on hold while I dealt with demolition and reconstruction activities and the endless, unavoidable details of trying to recall and document every damaged or destroyed item for my insurer. Prior to the fire, if I had digitally documented those possessions as well as my important papers and confidential data, establishing the replacement value of certain items would have gone more smoothly and I would not have felt so powerless in the months that followed.
